Hollywood Doc NOT an Expert on Abstinence
Published by anonymous March 28th, 2008 in "Comprehensive" Sex Ed, The CultureIf anyone saw the Early Show this morning, you saw Kate Walsh, who played a doctor on Grey’s Anatomy, talking about how abstinence education has failed our kids. Since when did an actress who plays a doctor on TV become any sort of expert on health issues? Did anyone else notice that no one from the abstinence community was on the show?! Don’t even get me started on fair media coverage.
She read what seemed to be a statement written for her by Planned Parenthood, of which she is a board member, saying that she was “appalled” by the statistic put out by the CDC of 1 in 5 teen girls is infected with an STD. Well, I read the CDC Report and first of all, it said 1 in 4 teen girls, so apparently she didn’t read it and neither did anyone else, and I think I am a little more concerned that no one is mentioning the other 3 out of 4 teen girls who DON’T have an STD.
She also said that we can’t rely on parents to educate their children, that the government needs to help. WHAT?! Sorry babe, but the government ain’t teaching my son on how to have sex, parents are the primary educators of their children. Where do you think “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” saying came from? I’m keeping that little apple of my eye close - and I didn’t have any consequences for waiting for sex until marriage -it seemed a lot easier than walking into a clinic asking for an STD test actually.
Also, no one mentions the CDC statistic that says that less teens are actually having sex. I’m pretty sure that isn’t due to condom education. And while we’re on the subject, let’s talk about how these condom and birth control worshippers are supposedly not receiving any government funding. Where do you think all the “family planning” money goes to? There are several sources of government funding that go to contraceptive sex education- Title X, Title XX, TANF, DASH, just to name a few- it’s just another way for them to complain about abstinence. Last time I checked, not having sex meant you didn’t get an STD or get pregnant.
If these people really want to help keep our kids safe, they wouldn’t teach them that haivng sex before marriage with whomever you want is okay and then giving them thier card so they can come to them for birth control and abortions. Seems like a money ploy if I ever saw one. Planned Parenthood is not as “non-profit” as they would like you to think.

I share your frustration at this outrageous situation. I was not able to watch the program; however, I did a little follow up research and found an article that has part of the conversation between Walsh and Chen that you are referring to (http://www.cultureandmediainstitute.org/articles/2008/20080328170418.aspx). What absolutely floored me was that Walsh even went so far as to say that “in the age of information, these women are just not getting adequate information.”
Adequate information? Adequate information! I fail to see how students, particularly public school students, are not receiving information concerning the consequences of unsafe sex or even the need for safe sex. I remember when I was a high school student that, no matter where I seemed to turn, the people around me were talking about their sexual experiences or making sexual inuendos, whether I wanted to hear it or not. In fact, I didn’t even need my parents to give me the “birds and the bees” talk when I was in middle school because I had already picked up the general gist from the people around me - middle school! Not to mention that even the commercials on television are sex-saturated. From the Trojan commercials with the pig who turns into a handsome dude when he decides to use a condom to any one of the commercials promoting the HPV vaccine. Essentially, any student would have to literally live under a rock in order to avoid encountering sexually-educating information, majority of which has nothing to do with the message of abstinence.
Furthermore, if Ms. Walsh is really as genuinely concerned about this apparent travesty as she seems to be, perhaps she should consult the writers of her show to provide her with the opportunity to portray to the millions of women who watch her engage in promiscuous acts the truth about random sex that way she can be assured that the information is getting out there.
