Gov’t Opposes Prostitution: NGOs Oppose Gov’t
Published by Hilary June 4th, 2007 in Everything is Unconstitutional, HIV/AIDS, Prostitution/Sex TradeIt seems more and more nowadays that everything is unconstitutional. Apparently, it is unconstitutional for the American government to decide what to do with its own money.
The federal government, you see, gives monies to organizations devoted to preventing and fighting HIV/AIDS throughout the world. In late 2005 the Bush administration added a caveat to this monetary aid. Organizations in receipt of these funds now have to sign a pledge that they oppose commercial sex work. Some organizations are not happy.
As they would have us understand it, this pledge requirement “forces” their organizations to conform to government standards, which is a violation of their First Amendment rights. I’m not sure how much my commentary could add to this. Suffice to say I consider it wonderfully idiotic to take offense that someone would like you to seek the end of prostitution rather than “empower” prostitutes while leaving them in such a “profession”.
